My first talk at the Joint Statistical Meetings was back in August 2018, when I presented in a topic contributed session called Innovative and Effective Teaching for Large-Enrollment Statistics and Data Science Courses — Topic Contributed Papers.
My talk focused on my exploration of how to transform “small-scale” activities to the large-enrolment course, in ways that enable rich learning conversations between the instructor and their students. I set up a page to support this talk, which contains the slides as well examples of Google-sheet based apps I developed to use in my large lectures. Following this conference, I applied for a SEED grant for innovation in teaching with Rhys, to further explore the use of custom-designed Google web apps within large lectures to enhance teaching and learning and to create guidelines for the design and implementation of large-scale interactives.
